Experience
LJ Writing Services (2003 – present) Independent Writer and Consultant. In my 16 years as a freelance writer, I have covered a vast range of topics, from food safety, quality, and defense to exhibits and entertainment, biofilm and E. coli, finance and home building, and cockroaches and mice in pieces ranging from magazine articles and corporate newsletters to commemorative reflections. I blend my innate skills as a writer with my diversity of experience to write to the intended audience, and provide new understanding, knowledge, or need.
Food Traceability (2019), Chapter Author. Wrote the chapter, “A Chain of Linked Nuances,” for the book Food Traceability, From Binders to Blockchain (Springer, 2019), which “provides a picture of food traceability for all aspects of the food system, recognizing the unique differences, challenges, and “states of the industry” in different types of food products, as well as the different pressures and opportunities at different points in the supply chain.”
The Acheson Group (2010 – present) Senior Advisor, Communications. I started writing the weekly food safety news e-newsletter for former FDA Associate Commissioner of Foods David Acheson when he was with Leavitt Partners, continued my work with him as he began his own consulting practice, and am now the Senior Advisor, Communications, for the group. While continuing to write food safety, cannabis, Canada, and other e-newsletters, blogs, papers, and reports for TAG, I also provide communications advice and assistance.
GIE Media (2004 – present) Editor, QA (Quality Assurance & Food Safety); Contributing Writer, PCT (Pest Control Technology). Starting as a contributing writer to both publications, I now manage the publication of QA magazine; am responsible for writing its feature articles, sourcing and visiting of Cover Profiles, and managing columnists; and developed and lead the QA Advisory Board.
Exhibitgroup/Giltspur (1998 – 2003). As a regional, then corporate Marketing Manager, I was responsible for various aspects of communications and sales management for this exhibit display company, including public relations, sales proposals and RFP responses, web content, trade shows, marketing collateral, sales forecast reports, and annual plans.
Ecolab Pest Elimination (1985 – 1998; present). I joined Ecolab as a freelance writer/editor in charge of developing and producing an employee communications newsletter. In my 13 years with this company, I progressed to Communications Coordinator, then Marketing Communications Manager. Through my tenure, I developed five distinct-genre newsletters, managed the Malcolm Baldrige Award submission process, wrote and coordinated publication of technical service manuals, managed the trade show program, and created and managed marketing collateral. I now write two of the division’s quarterly e-newsletters on a contract basis.
Suburban News Publications (1982 – 1984). As a reporter and copy editor for this weekly Ohio newspaper, I covered a schools beat, wrote feature articles, and edited releases.
